A Housing Led Approach to tackling Homelessness
The Access Housing Unit service delivers a 'housing led' approach to dealing with homelessness in Cork and Kerry. This approach is echoed in the Government's Homeless Policy Statement, issued in February 2013 which identifies:
'rapid provision of appropriate accommodation, with support as needed to ensure sustainable tenancies, as the key solution to ending homelessness'
There are two main elements to the service -
Pre and Post tenancy Support and Homelessness Prevention.
The primary purpose of the AHU is to support individuals and families to move out of emergency accommodation into private rented accommodation and providing tenancy sustainment to support people to sustain these tenancies.
The focus of the AHU's preventative service is on prompt and effective interventions where homelessness occurs or where there is a substantial risk of homelessness occurring in the immediate future.
