Threshold Conference June 2015

20 May 2015

‘Generation Rent: The Future of the Private Rented Sector in Ireland’

When: Tuesday 16th June, 9.00am to 3.30pm

Venue: Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2

The private rented sector has doubled in size over the past decade, with one in five households in Ireland now renting from a private landlord and an even higher proportion in our urban centres. But this sector is now under pressure, with a shortage of supply, rapidly rising rents, high numbers of landlords in mortgage arrears, and concerns about the suitability of accommodation.

This conference is about the future of this generation of renters, whether they are young families, single parents, immigrants or older people living alone. It is also about the over 150,000 landlords whose livelihoods, at least in part, depend on the private rented sector.

This conference will explore the current challenges facing the private rented sector and what options there are for the future direction of the sector. The conference will be chaired by the journalist and writer Frank McDonald, and will include inputs from the following Irish and international speakers:

  • Senator Aideen Hayden, Chairperson of Threshold
  • Prof. Peter Kemp, University of Oxford
  • Derek Scally, Berlin Correspondent, The Irish Times
  • Rory O’Donnell, Director, National Economic & Social Council (NESC)
  • Anne Marie Caulfield, Director, Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB)
  • Frank Conlon, Head of Strategic Property Division, IDA Ireland
  • Peter Stafford, Director, Property Industry Ireland
  • John O’Connor, Chief Executive, Housing Agency
  • Prof. Tony Fahey, University College Dublin
  • Prof. Eoin O’Sullivan, Trinity College Dublin
